How to Fix Lag

Try these first — they're free and solve the problem for most people.

01 Check your actual ping in-game

1. Join any server 2. Press Escape to open the menu — your ping is shown at the top of the player list (Tab key) in milliseconds 3. Alternatively, look at the server browser before joining — the 'Ping' column shows your measured latency to each server 4. Watch for ping spikes: if the number jumps erratically, that's jitter — as damaging as high average ping in gunfights

Confirms whether your problem is network (ping spikes) or hardware (FPS drops with stable ping). Essential first step before trying any fix.

02 Sort the server browser by ping

1. Open the main menu and click Play 2. In the server browser, click the 'Ping' column header to sort servers by latency 3. Servers under 80ms are in your region — prefer these for PvP 4. Filter by map or game mode to narrow down well-populated nearby servers 5. Look for servers consistently showing 30–60ms — these are geographically close to you

The single most effective fix. Going from a 200ms server to a 40ms server eliminates all visible lag immediately and costs nothing.

03 Switch to a wired Ethernet connection

1. Get a Cat5e or Cat6 Ethernet cable and plug one end into your PC, one into your router 2. In Windows: open Settings → Network & Internet → Wi-Fi → turn off Wi-Fi 3. Your PC will automatically use the wired connection 4. Rejoin your server and check the ping value — jitter should drop noticeably

WiFi adds 5-30ms of unpredictable jitter. In Unturned's server-authoritative model, jitter causes visible stuttering on other players even when your average ping looks fine. Wired is the cheapest meaningful hardware upgrade.

04 Close background bandwidth consumers

1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc → Task Manager → Performance → Open Resource Monitor 2. Click the Network tab — sort by 'Total (B/sec)' to identify what's using bandwidth 3. Common culprits: Windows Update (pause via Settings → Update → Pause 7 days), torrents, OneDrive, cloud backups, Discord video calls, Spotify 4. Close or pause all non-game applications before launching Unturned

Burst downloads during background sync can create 50–200ms ping spikes mid-session. Eliminating these removes a common source of random in-game lag.

05 Use a DNS server closer to your location

Press Win+R → type cmd → run as administrator, then: ipconfig /flushdns Then set DNS to Cloudflare: Control Panel → Network → Adapter → Properties → IPv4 → DNS: 1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1

Faster DNS reduces server browser load time (Unturned queries many server IPs on open). Minimal impact on in-game ping since game traffic is IP-based after connection, but improves browser responsiveness and first-join speed.

Good to know: Unturned uses Steam Datagram Relay (SDR) — Valve's own relay network that encrypts and routes all traffic between clients and game servers. The path from your PC to the nearest SDR relay still depends on your ISP, and that's where optimization helps.

Unturned uses Steam Datagram Relay. PingAim optimizes the path your ISP controls.

Still lagging? The problem is likely your ISP's routing to the game servers.

PingAim detects Unturned automatically

No manual config. PingAim identifies Unturned by process name and routes it through your fastest connection using a kernel-level WFP driver.
