Lord of the Rings Online FAQ — Ping, Servers, Network

Does PingAim work with Lord of the Rings Online? Why is my LOTRO ping so high if I'm in Europe?

Does PingAim work with Lord of the Rings Online?

Yes. LOTRO has no anti-cheat system, which means PingAim's WFP driver works without any compatibility issues. PingAim detects lotroclient.exe and routes it through your chosen network interface — 5G tethering, Ethernet, or any second connection. There is zero risk of a ban, as Standing Stone Games has no policy against network routing software.

Why is my LOTRO ping so high if I'm in Europe?

Almost all LOTRO servers are physically hosted in the eastern United States (New Jersey area). European players connect across the Atlantic and typically see 80–150ms ping regardless of their home internet quality. The only EU-located server is the Mordor Legendary Server (Frankfurt), which requires a VIP subscription. PingAim can help reduce jitter and choose the best available path from your connections, but cannot eliminate the fundamental geographic distance.

Does LOTRO use UDP or TCP?

LOTRO uses encrypted UDP for game state communication — player positions, combat, and world updates all go over UDP on ports 9000–9010 and 2900–2910. The launcher uses standard TCP (HTTP/HTTPS) for patching and account authentication. UDP is better suited to real-time game data because it avoids TCP's retransmission delays.

What ports does LOTRO use for firewall rules?

LOTRO needs UDP ports 9000–9010 (game traffic) and 2900–2910 (chat). The launcher needs TCP port 443 for authentication. The official Standing Stone Games support page lists the executables to whitelist: lotroclient.exe, LotroLauncher.exe, and LotroInvoker.exe. If you're creating firewall rules, allowing all three executables outbound is easier than specifying port ranges.

Does LOTRO have server lag issues?

Yes — LOTRO's server performance under load is a long-standing community complaint. During festivals and high-population events, even players with low ping experience rubberbanding and delayed skill responses. This is server-side lag (the game engine processing too many players at once) rather than network latency. No network optimizer, including PingAim, can fix server-side performance issues — only Standing Stone Games can address those through infrastructure improvements.
