Factorio

Factorio's lockstep engine means your ping sets the delay on every action — and a single spike can pause the session for your whole team. Route factorio.exe through your fastest connection and keep your co-op factory running.

Why ping matters in Factorio

Latency sensitivity Medium

Ping matters but is not the dominant factor.

Factorio is a co-op factory builder, not a competitive PvP game — raw ping matters less than in shooters. However, the deterministic lockstep model means your ping directly sets the command delay in ticks: at 60ms you wait ~4 ticks before an action registers; at 300ms you wait ~18 ticks. Placing a building, opening a chest, or picking up an item all require a confirmed server round-trip. High ping does not cause rubber-banding but it does cause every factory interaction to feel sluggish. More critically, latency spikes and packet loss are genuinely damaging: a sudden jump from 50ms to 500ms forces the game to buffer inputs and can cause the session to pause for all players while waiting. Packet loss triggers retransmission in the custom UDP layer, which spikes effective latency. For a smooth cooperative factory session, consistent low-jitter latency matters more than the absolute ping value.

About Factoriobackground, studio, esports scene

Factorio is a factory-building and automation game developed and published by Wube Software, released in full on August 14, 2020 after a long early access period. Players land on an alien planet, mine raw resources, and construct increasingly complex automated factories — from hand-mining ore to belt-fed megafactories producing thousands of items per second. The goal is to build a rocket and escape, though most players spend hundreds of hours optimising their factory long after launch.

Factorio supports full cooperative multiplayer where any number of players share a single map. The game uses a lockstep deterministic networking model: instead of synchronising game state between machines, every client runs an identical copy of the simulation and only player inputs are sent over the network. This means all clients must process every tick identically — if any client diverges, a desynchronisation (desync) occurs and that client is disconnected. The practical consequence for network quality is significant: your ping determines the command delay (how many ticks elapse before your input takes effect), and sudden changes in latency or packet loss cause severe lag spikes or desyncs rather than smooth rubber-banding.

The October 2024 Space Age DLC (version 2.0) expanded the game to four new planets with unique mechanics and a space-platform factory layer, pushing the all-time concurrent peak to 118,674 players on Steam. As of early 2026 the game maintains roughly 19,000 concurrent players — exceptionally high for a premium-only title with no free-to-play component. Factorio has no anti-cheat software; its deterministic architecture makes cheating structurally difficult without triggering a desync. The game is available on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and does not require Steam — Wube sells DRM-free copies directly from factorio.com.

PingAim detects Factorio automatically

No manual config. PingAim identifies Factorio by process name and routes it through your fastest connection using a kernel-level WFP driver.

When does PingAim help — and when doesn't it?

PingAim helps when...

  • Phone 5G tethering available — route Factorio through mobile and free home connection for downloads
  • Both WiFi and Ethernet connected — PingAim picks the interface with lower jitter to the game server
  • Evening congestion causes ping spikes that pause the multiplayer session or trigger desync
  • Home network shared with household streaming or large downloads competing for bandwidth
  • Hosting a server for friends and your upload is congested — reducing your own ping stabilises the session
  • Playing on a server in another region (e.g. EU server from North America) where interface selection meaningfully changes the route
  • ISP routes to your server's hosting datacenter (Hetzner, OVH) through a congested or suboptimal path

Won't help when...

  • Only one active network connection with no phone to tether — no second path available
  • Already below 50ms on your chosen server with stable, low-jitter connection
  • Server-side performance issues — Factorio UPS drops when the factory becomes too complex, which is CPU-bound on the server, not a network issue
  • Desyncs caused by mod incompatibilities or game bugs — network quality does not affect code-level desyncs
  • Solo play — PingAim only benefits multiplayer sessions
