Company of Heroes 3

Got a phone and WiFi? That's two connections. PingAim routes RelicCoH3.exe through whichever has the lower, more stable ping to Relic's AWS servers — because in a lockstep RTS, one jitter spike freezes the match for every player in the lobby. Streams, downloads, and Discord stay on the other connection.

Why ping matters in Company of Heroes 3

Latency sensitivity High

Ping noticeably shapes the experience.

Company of Heroes 3 uses a deterministic lockstep simulation — one of the netcode architectures most sensitive to network conditions. Unlike server-authoritative games with lag compensation, lockstep has no mechanism to hide latency: your effective input delay equals your network round-trip time plus the turn execution buffer. At 50ms ping, units respond in roughly 100-250ms. At 150ms, that grows to 300-450ms — enough to miss critical micro-management windows during tank engagements. Jitter (ping variation) is even more destructive: a single late packet causes the entire simulation to pause and wait, visibly freezing the match for all players. ISP routing instability, congestion, and suboptimal paths to Relic/AWS servers all cause these spikes. Competitive CoH3 play involves rapid unit micro, flanking maneuvers, and timing-critical abilities — all of which are directly degraded by latency and jitter.

About Company of Heroes 3background, studio, esports scene

Company of Heroes 3 is a real-time strategy game developed by Relic Entertainment and published by Sega, released on February 23, 2023 as the third mainline entry in the Company of Heroes franchise. Set in the Mediterranean and Italian theaters of World War II, it features two dynamic campaigns alongside the series' signature combined-arms multiplayer. The PC version arrived first; PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions followed on May 30, 2023.

The game runs on Relic's proprietary Essence Engine 5.0 — the same engine that powers Age of Empires IV. Multiplayer uses a deterministic lockstep simulation model: all clients simulate an identical copy of the game, and only player inputs (commands) are transmitted over the network. Before each simulation turn advances, every client must have received inputs from all other players. This makes lockstep inherently sensitive to latency and jitter — a single late or dropped packet stalls the entire match for everyone.

Multiplayer infrastructure runs on Relic's dedicated server backend hosted on AWS (Amazon Web Services). The backend handles matchmaking, authentication, and session relay. Company of Heroes 3 shipped without a dedicated third-party anti-cheat — no EAC, no BattlEye, no VAC. The community has noted this as a persistent cheating concern in ranked play. Trainers and Cheat Engine work freely in single-player and offline modes. On Steam the game uses the standard Steamworks networking stack (ports 27015-27036).

No manual config. PingAim identifies Company of Heroes 3 by process name and routes it through your fastest connection using a kernel-level WFP driver.

When does PingAim help — and when doesn't it?

PingAim helps when...

  • You have a phone with 5G/LTE — tether via USB for a dedicated CoH3 connection isolated from household traffic
  • You have both WiFi and Ethernet — route RelicCoH3.exe through whichever pings lower to AWS
  • You stream your matches — separate OBS and game traffic so upload congestion doesn't cause lockstep stalls
  • Your WiFi is congested in evenings — phone tethering bypasses shared household contention
  • You have two ISPs or a dual-WAN router
  • Windows picks the wrong interface for RelicCoH3.exe and you want explicit control
  • You're in SEA or Eastern Europe where Relic reported connection issues — a second path often routes differently

Won't help when...

  • You only have one network connection with no way to add a second
  • Your connection is already stable (under 50ms, no jitter) to the nearest AWS region
  • Input delay that feels 'sluggish' — some of this is structural to lockstep, not your routing
  • FPS drops or stuttering caused by CPU/GPU load during large battles
  • Desync disconnects caused by game bugs rather than network issues
